Aaliyah Biopic 'Seamless as Selena' Says Director - February 2, 2009

Fans anticipating R&B singer/actress Aaliyah's forthcoming biopic can rest assured that the film is going to be as seamless as Jennifer Lopez's praised role in Selena.

According to Bill Condon, the director for the as-yet-untitled pic and famed director of the hit film 'Dreamgirls' starring Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce Knowles and Jamie Foxx, Aaliyah's biopic and its cast are studying hard to make sure the pic is up to par.

"We are going to great extremities to make this movie perfect. We have (Keisha) Chante in extensive training studying, speaking with family members, watching personal footage and in choreography training with Aaliyah's choreographer and dear friend Fatima Robinson. This movie will will be seamless the same way it was for Selena fans who enjoyed Jennifer Lopez."

In addition to Keisha Chante, who has been cast as Aaliyah, the "One In A Million" singer's choreographer Fatima Robinson, Timbaland, Ginuwine, and Missy Elliott are to be featured in the film. "Rock The Boat" music video director Hype Williams has also been tapped for the film to recreate Aaliyah's final video shoot.

Sources close to the much-anticipated film say they'll be "going deep into Aaliyah's life".

Lil Jon Off The Hook In "Weedman" Copyright Case - February 1, 2009

A judge rejected an appeal of a copyright lawsuit against Atlanta rapper Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz’ over the track “The Weedman.”

The lawsuit, which also named TVT Records, was dismissed from United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia earlier this week.

Freelance musician Redwin Wilchcombe claimed that he and his manager were members of a production team named “Red Teamwerk.”

In May of 2002, Wilchcombe met Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz at the Audio Vision recording studio, while the rappers were working on their album Kingz of Crunk.

According to the lawsuit, Lil Jon came up with the idea for the song “Weedman,” after someone in the studio suggest they call a dealer for a supply of marijuana.

Wilchcombe, who was in the recording studio, claims he came up with a hook for the record, which was to be used an in interlude or segue between the different sides of Kingz of Crunk.

Lil Jon critiqued the work and also gave input on the track, which Wilchcombe claims he authored in full and performed live for Lil Jon, who approved the words.

Lil’ Jon then allegedly mixed the track, added some vocals and released the song on the 21-track album Kingz of Crunk, which eventually sold over 2 million copies.

Wilchcombe, who filed his copyright for the work almost two years after the album was released, had no written agreement in regards to the song.

In his lawsuit, he acknowledged being a part of the creative process and granted Lil’ Jon oral permission to use the recording.

“The district court correctly found that the parties’ conduct created an implied license,“ ruled Honorable Chief Judge Robert L. Hinkle. “Wilchcombe does not dispute that he created the song for the album at Lil Jon’s request and that he instructed Taylor to send it to Lil Jon for final mixing and inclusion on the album. Wilchcombe testified in his deposition that he understood Lil Jon would use the song on the album. In addition, Wilchcombe does not dispute that when he handed over the song, he never discussed with Taylor or any of the Appellees that using the song would constitute copyright infringement.”

Because there was written contract in regards to the song to support Wilchcombe’s allegations of a breach of fiduciary duty for not being compensated, the district court dismissed his appeal.

“The district court properly rejected these arguments for this reason, and we likewise refuse to give Wilchcombe a ‘second bite at the apple.’”

JIM JONES…OBAMA=N***AS?

I reported a ways back that Jim Jones has stopped calling people the N-Word, but not substitutes it for “Obama.” So, he might say, “What’s up my Obama.” A reader recently emailed me up and expressed his discontent with the practice.

Hey dog my name is Levonn and I am now will not support anything that Jim Jones and anyone affiliated with him will ever do again. I was never a fan of his but some songs were alright. But this ignorant cat took shit to far. I listened to an interview where he now says "Obamas" in the place of "Niggas" . This shit has to be exposed for the self destructive ignorance that it is. It hurts to say this but rappers have influence over young people. I'm not saying Barack is going to solve every problem that blacks face in this county but he is a hell of a start. Jim Jones and his ignorance will only influence young kids that don't understand the significance of his election and turn it into something derogatory. I say nigga but I really plan on stopping it. Replacing it with another word to tear blacks down will not do. Please I see that you care about this country put his ass on blast!!!!!!!

NEWS: DIDDY'S FORMER GHOST WRITER CALLS PUFFY "THE DEVIL" IN BAD BOY TELL-ALL Book - January 30, 2009

Former Bad Boy rapper Mark Curry has penned a new book Dancing With the Devil speaking on his experience on the famed roster and Diddy's business habits.
A section of the text claims his former boss enforced appearance fees for Bad Boy artists.

"Even worse, Puff charged the artists for his appearances on their records and in the videos, usually without their realizing it until they received their royalty statements," the first chapter reads. "That's when they discovered that a large sum of their money had gone to fees which were doubled, tripled and even quadrupled because of Puff "special guest appearance. He charged artists, for example, for having his Bentley in their videos -- which he insisted upon -- then took a tax credit for business use of the car." (Dancing With the Devil)

The rapper was a Bad Boy artist for nearly a decade.

Mark Curry is an Atlanta-based entertainer who was signed to the Bad Boy Entertainment record label from 1997 until 2005. He wrote most of Diddy's first hit singles, including "Come With Me" from the 1998 Godzilla soundtrack featuring Led Zeppelin. (Mark Curry)

Curry has collaborated with rap stars and featured on various Bad Boy hits.

He is known for his innovative style of rapping by rhyming almost every last word on each line in his verses. His first appearances were as a featured rapper on other artists songs, most notably "Gangsta Sh*t" on Diddy's (then Puff Daddy) second album Forever along with Lil' Kim, and "Dangerous MC's" along with Snoop Dogg and Busta Rhymes on the Notorious BIG second posthumous release Born Again respectively. He has appeared on many other tracks in his Bad Boy career including the track he is most well known for "Bad Boy For Life" along with Black Rob in 2001 on the P. Diddy album The Saga Continues... Is Lil Wayne The New Axl Rose? / Kelly Rowland gives Matthew Knowles the Boot! - January 29, 2009

The best thing about "Prom Queen," Lil Wayne's much-discussed foray into the world of rock, is probably the intro: 20 seconds of chugging minor chords and exploding guitar frippery that manages to sound a bit like an M1 Abrams crashing into a fireworks factory (it also sounds a little bit like Hum). It is a strangely accomplished and somewhat beguiling opening — you start to believe that perhaps Wayne can actually pull this off — but then he starts singing about underwear, and it's all downhill from there.

Actually, that's not entirely true (the bit about the intro being the best part, not the bit about it all being downhill from there). The best thing about "Prom Queen" is that it actually exists.

Because, while the song is kinda lousy, there's no denying the fact that Wayne made it — and fully intended on promoting it as the first single off his "rock" album, Rebirth before it leaked earlier this week. This is real. This is actually happening. And by its very existence, "Prom Queen" is so much more than most "rock" songs, because it reveals universal truths. It is proof positive of several things.

First and foremost, Lil Wayne is crazy. For months, he claimed that he was going to record an honest-to-goodness rock album, that he was seriously considering ditching rapping altogether. Nobody seemed to believe him when he said this, perhaps because nobody believed that anyone could deliberately derail such a successful career (or perhaps because they'd seen him "play" guitar). After all, Wayne had just come off a year in which he became (arguably) the biggest rap star on the planet. He sold a million albums in a week, landed eight Grammy nominations and shilled Nike and Gatorade. To throw this all away would be beyond crazy ... and yet, Wayne decided to do just that. "Prom Queen" is proof.

Secondly, Lil Wayne gets terrible career advice. Or he gets sound career advice, but chooses to ignore it. (The latter is probably the case.) I cannot imagine anyone telling Wayne that recording a rock album would be a good idea, and yet, he did it anyway. And this also could be explained by another truth: Wayne surrounds himself with people who don't tell him "no." And, judging by "Prom Queen," perhaps "no" is the most powerful word in the English language.

In a recent interview with Billboard, the two producers who worked on the song admitted that they too were thrown by just how rock "Prom Queen" is. And when they offered to add some organs to the track — which would, admittedly, probably make the thing about 50 percent better — he told them that he didn't want them on there. For whatever reason — it's Wayne's song, after all — "Prom Queen" is what it is.

Third, that Wayne does not let a perceived lack of talent stand in the way of realizing his dreams. It's not clear how much of "Prom Queen" he played himself, though judging by the skill he's shown on the guitar to this point, I'd say it's probably somewhere in between "none" and "one bar, but only because the producers accidentally hit record while Wayne was wooshing his fingers up and down the fretboard like a hyperactive 3-year-old, and everyone was too baked to delete it later." I don't think any of that actually matters, though — Wayne the Rock Star is basically the same as Wayne the Rap Star: deceptively gifted, yet dangerously determined.

And finally — after considering all these things — Wayne is the most interesting rock star in the world. By a mile. In fact, here's an even better one: He is Axl Rose. It's not that great of a leap. Both could kindly be described as "eccentric" (or full-blown batsh--). Both promised (threatened?) to release ill-advised vanity projects, neither listening to the doubters who sniggered that it would never happen and the advisers who said it would be a terrible idea. To extend the comparison, Wayne's Rebirth is basically Rose's Chinese Democracy, minus 15 years and millions of dollars. ("Prom Queen" actually sounds like one of the more industrial tracks on Democracy.) It will probably garner the same reception, both critically and commercially.

Like Wayne, it's fairly obvious — given Democracy's epic time in the oven and its uneven marketing scheme — that no one ever told Rose "no," either. Or if they did, he certainly didn't listen (or he fired them). The only difference between the two seems to be talent. I will begrudgingly admit that, when it comes to singing, Weezy F. Baby is no W. Axl Rose. But it's 2009. Auto-Tune is everywhere. Since when does singing matter, anyway?

All of this might be complete nonsense. Rebirth might never see the light of day (actually, given Wayne's track record with release dates, this seems very possible). But "Prom Queen" exists. This cannot be denied. And that existence is meaningful. Take a look at this week's Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The top five features songs by Shinedown, Disturbed, Nickelback, Mudvayne and Seether. It is probably the most depressing list in history. None of these songs make you feel anything ... they reveal no truths (except Nickelback's "Something In Your Mouth," which affirms that, yes, you would look better with something in your mouth). And that's why Wayne's song is better than each of them. Not, you know, musically; universal truth-ily. And that's important. Axl would be proud. Or jealous.

He even helped raise her.
Both Rowland and Knowles — who still manages daughter Beyonce — called the split amicable. Both say they will always be family.
Rowland has sold millions of records as part of Destiny's Child, but her solo career hasn't matched that success.
Rowland — who turns 27 next month — did not say who her new manager will be.

First Lady Not Happy With Malia, Sasha Dolls - January 25, 2009

First lady Michelle Obama is not pleased about the marketing of a pair of dolls that bear the same names as her daughters. "We believe it is inappropriate to use young private citizens for marketing purposes," Ms. Obama's spokeswoman said.

Ty Inc. has released the 12-inch plush dolls as part of the company's "TyGirlz Collection," introduced in 2007. The Sasha doll has pigtails and wears a white and pink dress with hearts. The Malia doll has a side ponytail and a long-sleeve shirt with capri pants. The Oak Brook-based company chose the dolls' names because "they are beautiful names," not because of any resemblance to President Obama's daughters, said spokeswoman Tania Lundeen. "There's nothing on the dolls that refers to the Obama girls," Lundeen said. "It would not be fair to say they are exact replications of these girls. They are not."

Public figures have a legal right to control how their images are used, but Lundeen would not comment on legal issues or if the company's lawyers have become involved with the dolls, according to NBC News. "I'm not an attorney. I can't answer that," she said. The dolls have "real doll hair" and the suggested retail price is $9.99, Lundeen said. The dolls were introduced in early January and a limited supply has been shipped to retailers.

Beanie Babies, small plush toys that developed a cult following after they were released in 1994, have reportedly generated sales of at least $6 billion for Ty, Crain's Chicago Business reported. In the real world, 7-year-old Sasha and 10-year-old Malia have been the focus of intense interest. A throng of reporters followed their first day at school. News reports detailed what they wore on Inauguration Day.
That fascination will make the Ty dolls a success, said Denise Gary Robinson, president of DollsLikeMe.com, an online specialty doll boutique that specializes in ethnic dolls, toys and gifts. "Girls all over the world, of all colors, will be looking for these dolls. They want to identify with these two girls," Robinson said.

Is 'Anti-Religion' New Trend Among Rappers? - January 24, 2009

It seems that "not believing in religion" is becoming a trend, just like the vocoder, among rappers; as two of hip-hop's most controversial and talked about emcee's have spoken out on their religious disbeliefs.

Rapper Lil Wayne recently stated that he doesn't write his songs and he doesn't believe in anything written down, including the Bible, as told to GQ magazine. "I don't believe the Bible, nothing that's written, because nothing that's written is to be believed. Well... There is one [book] I read and get information from. The damn dictionary.

Wayne is actually very passionate about his belief in spoken words and he also talks about his spiritual side quite a bit. Later in the interview he says, "Family is always first. But this is under nothing else, except God... I pray every night and day. That's about it." When GQ asks to whom he prays to, "Whoever's listening," Lil Wayne replies.

His rapping counterpart, Kanye West also delved into religion in a recent interview with Bossip.com. When asked if he is a Christian in response to this recent quote, "I don't believe in religion, and I don't believe in giving it all up to Jesus." Yeezy stated, "I believe in God. Christianity wasn't an option when I was growing up, it was the only thing. It wasn't like I was given the decision at the time. You know how you decide that you want to be a Doctor or a Lawyer or a painter or a basketball player or whatever? You're not given a decision of what religion you want. Your parents just give it to you. Like, you're a Jew or you're a Muslim or you're a Christian," he explains. "I feel like religion is more about separation and judgment than bringing people together and understanding. That's all I'm about.

I'm about accepting people for who they are. Live and let live. I fully embrace every culture there is." West goes on to say that he "would never go into religion," and doesn't believe in "'this everybody's going to hell thing,'" adding that "everyone who isn't a Christian is in the wrong." "I believe in Jesus as an icon, but I don't feel the responsibility to put my life on Jesus," he expresses.

The "Jesus Walks" hitmaker says, "I feel I need to take responsibility for my own successes and failures. Why I say, 'I don't give it all up to Jesus' is because there are a lot of people who don't take responsibility for their lives, and always think Jesus is gonna handle it. And, that's what I refuse to do."

I disagree with them both but, who am i to judge. I pray for them both. I cast all of my cares on Jesus but, this is just me...

Update: Aaron McGruder Explains Obama Comments - January 23, 2009

In a letter to Editor and Publisher Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder writes:

“For a long time now, I have tried to keep my opinions on the election and Barack Obama to myself. I occasionally do speaking engagements, which are not open to the press, and unfortunately some of my comments have been twisted around in a silly manner. The claim that I asserted our new President was not Black is categorically false.

“I have seen an endless stream of Black pundits on TV pontificating about the significance of President Obama’s election - many of them making reference to the 3/5th’s clause in the constitution regarding slaves. The point I was making is that this is not an accurate comparison.

“Barack is the son of an immigrant, not the descendant of slaves. It’s like comparing a half-Japanese man to the oppressed Chinese who built the American railroads. Yes, they are both Asian, but it is not an honest or accurate comparison. We all share the common experiences of being Black in America today - we do not all share a common history. A history that in part makes us who we are - and in some cases (as with the psychological damage that still lingers from slavery) holds us back. These are not, I believe, insignificant distinctions.

“I did say I was cautiously pessimistic about Obama’s Presidency - but this is simply acknowledging the reality of an American Empire that is out of control and on the verge of collapse. Let us not forget that on the eve of the election, we witnessed a near-trillion dollar robbery of the US treasury. That robbery is still taking place. I do not blame President Obama, but I do not believe the financial and corporate interests that own and control this country will fold so easily. I do not question the integrity of the man as much as the power of his office - which I believe has greatly diminished over the years. I believe the Federal Reserve Bank, the Military Industrial Complex, and the massive corporate interests that run this country have more power than our new President. I hope I am wrong.

“After 9/11, I witnessed most of this country become obsessed with squashing dissent and silencing critics. I hope this election does not turn Black America towards this same, fascist mind state; but already I am starting to see it, and it saddens me greatly. I absolutely wish our new President and his family success and safety. But after all I have witnessed in my lifetime, and especially in the last eight years, I am not ready to lay down my skepticism or my outrage for this government. To do so would be unwise and, ironically enough, anti-American.”

Maybe I’m reading this wrong but it seems that McGruder still believes that Kenyans did not experience slavery, so Obama cannot relate to the African-American experience of slavery in the United States? And by extension, that Black immigrants from the West Indies, etc. did not experience slavery and are not “descendants of slaves.” This is not true! The Portugese and Arabs enslaved Kenyans and transported them to the United States! Yes, the experience of slavery in the United States is unique but that does not mean that Africans in the diaspora did not suffer the same atrocities. Marcus Garvey was born in Jamaica but didn’t think this made him different from Blacks born in America.

McGruder’s illustration of a Japanese American’s experience being different from a Chinese American’s is disingenuous because the Japanese suffered their own brand of racism in this country after Pearl Harbor. Why shouldn’t Asians in America use this as a point of commonality as opposed to another reason to separate themselves? “My oppression wasn’t the same as yours.” This is akin to saying that a Jewish person born in the United States can’t embrace the history of the Holocaust, which is just insane. I was born and raised in the United States but my father is an immigrant. Does this mean he can’t relate to my experience in this country as a Black man?

What if someone digs now into Michelle Obama’s lineage and finds out she’s half Cherokee (like many Black Americans) does this make her less representative in his eyes? Come on Aaron, you’re better than this. Stop looking for ways to divide us.

Comment: Sometimes the smarter the person, the dumber they sound. Aaron needs a reality check and fast...

Jay-Z Gives "Blueprint 3" Update, "I'm Gonna Take My Time" - January 22, 2009

Hip-Hop mogul Jay-Z has addressed the current status of his highly anticipated album The Blueprint 3 by debunking rumors of a set release date.

After speculation about the album's release, Jay-Z has weighed in on the project's rumored release date.

"For me, the process of making an album is difficult with so many things going on," he said in an interview. "And me, I wanna make it beyond and above. I'm gonna take my time with it. I don't have any quotas, and that's a good thing. It may be too freeing. It's a good thing and a bad thing. You know, I think I need some restrictions. 'Cause if I had restrictions, I would have done it in three weeks. I would have made what I believe to be a great piece of art. I actually recorded a lot of records already. You know, all those records that leaked [online] were on The Blueprint 3." (MTV)

As previously reported, Roc-A-Fella artist/producer Kanye West recently said the disc would drop next month.

"I'm constantly making music," Ye said in a teleconfernce last November. "We almost finished with Jay album. we almost finished before I even dropped my album. Jay album is coming in February." (SOHH)

Throughout the fall, Ye was reportedly chosen to produce a majority of the project.

Kanye will indeed be producing most, if not all, of the album. Remember back in the day when an artist would do a whole album with one producer for cohesiveness? Think classic Snoop or Jeru with Primo... and fast forward it to 2008. Jay will be leaking the finished version of "Jockin" as soon as he adds a new 3rd verse to the song. (The Press Play Show)
